The African American Civil War Museum and Memorial invited speakers to discuss their ancestral ties to soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT). The event entitled Bearing Witness was hosted by famed author and Emmy award winning TV host, Cheryl Wills. Several presenters including the host, only recently discovered their ancestral connection to an African American soldier who served in the United Stated Colored Troops. There were over 200,000 African American men who enlisted in the United States Colored Troops and many African Americans have at least one ancestor that served during the Civil War. I discussed with the audience the journey that I have been on preserving my USCT ancestor’s burial site in Henderson, Kentucky.
